“It is with immense pleasure that I announce we have successfully passed the Eco-Schools certification and have officially been awarded the Green Flag. This flag is not an endpoint but a starting point, highlighting our collective journey in the right direction” announced Mr Vincenzo Rosario La Franca Pitarresi, the Head of Science Department and mastermind behind the Eco-School certification.
Today Wednesday 5 June, the school witnessed a celebratory moment to unpack the Eco-School green flag. Below the speech our junior student Anna Karpovich prepared for the occasion:
”Joining the Eco-Schools program has meant participating in an action plan aimed at respecting our planet. The true protagonists of this project have been the students, from the youngest in PYP to the oldest in DP. Our common goal was to reduce food waste within our campus. By working together, this objective has been successfully achieved: over the one school year, we managed to reduce food waste on campus by 39%. However, the Eco-Schools project has not only involved the school community within the campus but has also extended beyond, promoting a sense of community and belonging to the territory. The students collaborated with WWF Oasi della Valle Averto and together they planted trees. Additionally, the students, along with some parents, went to Certosa Island and, in collaboration with the BioDesign Foundation, participated in cleaning the island’s beach.
The Eco-Schools program offers students the opportunity to be the main actors, the protagonists, the architects of the action plan. This program has given them the chance to work in teams, grow as a community, respect the environment and each other, and believe that a more sustainable future is possible if we all work together to achieve it.”
